Identifying and Supporting Digital Scholarship at Harvard, Part 2

As demand for Digital scholarship (DS) projects grows more frequent across the disciplines, librarians are increasingly fielding requests for support for such projects. Even “traditional” research now often involves digital methods such as data wrangling, data visualization, digital editing or web publishing. Librarians, staff, and research assistants are often the first to be contacted for such services. This workshop will provide librarians with a framework for identifying such requests, and the knowledge necessary for building a bridge to an extensive pool of resources and expertise. Through a combination of hands-on exercises and role-playing scenarios, participants will leave with a practical understanding of successful digital scholarship consultations and a heightened awareness of the digital scholarship landscape across Harvard.

Workshop participants will:

• Learn to identify the types of requests involving digital scholarship
• Gain a deeper understanding of how to build a bridge from their area of expertise to digital scholarship support
• Survey the digital scholarship landscape at Harvard, pinpointing particular methods or platforms; identifying internal and external grants and training; and obtaining additional support.
• Sketch the contours of a typical digital scholarship project across its lifecycle
• Conduct mock consultations based on real scenarios to practice helping students, faculty, and staff resolve their digital scholarship questions

This workshop is aimed at liaison librarians (both subject and functional specialists) and other library, HUIT, or departmental staff who conduct reference interviews, consultations, or would like to work on digital scholarship / digital humanities projects.

After completing the workshop, attendees will be encouraged to participate in the Digital Scholarship Support Group's Office Hours, where they can gain increased exposure to DS projects and questions.
