Alan holds a B.S. in biology from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and a Ph.D. in biology from the University of Michigan. He has published numerous articles on the intersection of technology and teaching and learning, and serves as principal investigator on a research project aimed at understanding faculty and student use of digital libraries and digital learning materials. He is also an alumnus of the distinguished MOR Associates IT Leaders Program.

Alan is the Principal Research Computing Facilitator at Harvard University, leading Arts and Humanities Research Computing among other research computing initiatives. Alan previously served as the Managing Director of Academic Technology, which at different times included Academic Technology for the FAS, Digital Video Services, Digital Accessibility Services, Harvard Web Publishing, Arts and Humanities Research Computing, and the program evaluation team. In this role, he was the HUIT lead in ensuring the delivery of essential academic technology services to faculty and students, integrating technology resources into courses and research, and providing thought leadership and direction for innovation in educational pedagogy. Alan also previously served as the Assistant CIO for Advanced Computing Infrastructure in the Office of Vice Provost for Information Technology and CIO at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
